"All
the elegance and charm of the victorian period"
A
delightful oasis within the city centre, the Great Northern
Hotel is a truly classic ‘Railway Hotel’
with all the elegance and charm of the Victorian period. The
main part of the building still retains much of its original
structure designed in 1849 by Lincoln architect, Henry
Goddard and built by Mr FW Costar.
More than a century and half later, extensive restoration
and expansion projects have ensured that the spacious and
light rooms have been preserved, as well as additional banqueting
and conference facilities made available. The restaurant and
the cosy, comfortable lounge open onto the attractive gardens,
which surround the hotel providing a tranquil, relaxing environment.
For more than 125 years, the ownership of the hotel was linked with that of the nearby railway but in 1993, the hotel came under private ownership for the first time in its history. Local businessman Peter Boizot MBE DL is also the founder of the Pizza Express group.
Peterborough is in an ideal position for a leisure break,
within easy reach of Cambridge, Ely and the horse racing
at Huntingdon. Activities such as boating, bird-watching
and walking expeditions at Rutland Water can all be arranged
and diverse entertainment in the city together with its
historical cathedral and Burghley House in nearby Stamford
provide places of interest to visit.
